A leaked photo supposedly shows Apple’s silicone cases for the iPhone 16 lineup without a cutout for the rumored capacitive Capture button. Instead, they sport an “integrated design,” which seemingly will not affect the new capacitive button’s functionality.

Apple’s silicone iPhone 16 cases could have an edge over third-party options

Multiple rumors point to Apple including a new Capture button on the iPhone 16 series, located on the same side as the Power/Side key. The capacitive button will act as a shutter key in the Camera app. A light press on the button will lock focus, while a harder press will take a picture. Sliding your finger on the button reportedly will zoom in or out in the viewfinder.

Apple likely will use the Capture button in other system apps as well, though it’s unclear how they will take advantage of the pressure-sensitive button. Third-party camera apps supposedly will also have access to the Capture button, too.

Integrated design that works with Capture button

Most third-party iPhone cases that leaked so far feature a cutout for the Capture button. But based on the leaked official iPhone 16 cases, it appears Apple cases won’t include a cutout. Instead, they will sport an integrated design, with indents on both sides of the button for easy identification.

“It is said that the official protective case of Apple iPhone 16 series will be made into an integrated design without this opening, which will not affect the normal use of this capacitive button,” said leaker Duan Rui in a Wednesday post on X.

Capacitive Capture button coming to all iPhone 16 models?

The leaked case further corroborates rumors that Apple will bring the Capture button to the entire iPhone 16 series. The force-sensitive button won’t be exclusive to the Pro models. Leaked iPhone 16 CAD renders from February 2024 also point to the Capture button coming to all models.

Apple will unveil the iPhone 16 series alongside the Apple Watch Series 10 at the “It’s Glowtime” event on September 9. You can read our iPhone 16 rumor roundup for a sneak peek at the features and upgrades coming.
