Apple TV+ reportedly renewed its comedy/drama Shrinking for season three on Thursday, continuing the teamup between Jason Segel and Harrison Ford.
Season two is streaming now. And with the new announcement, fans can enjoy it without any worries it’ll end with a cliffhanger that never gets resolved.
Apple TV+ greenlights Shrinking season 3
There should be little surprise that Apple TV+ already greenlit Shrinking season three. It became one of the most popular series on streaming during the premiere season, and it stayed near the tops of the ratings charts its whole run.
And it’s a hit with critics, too. Season one received a 91% approval rating from the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. Jason Segel scored an Emmy nomination for his work on the show, as did Jessica Williams. The quality is holding up: the sophomore season of the show earned a 90% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
And season three is on the way. The Hollywood Reporter said:
“The renewal news was announced Thursday at New York Comic Con when Segel and Goldstein — along with castmembers Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley — took the Main Stage for a discussion around season two.”
There’s no word on when the following season will reach Apple TV+. But with season two kicking off this week, the smart money is on a return about a year from now.
Maybe you should tune in now
In the Apple TV+ comedy, the therapists need as much help as anyone else. Apple’s official description of the series says:
“Shrinking follows a grieving therapist (played by Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he makes huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own.”
That could be the description for a drama, but the series generally plays with the premise for laughs. Not entirely though, as this is more of a dramedy.
In season one, Jimmy (played by Jason Segel from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Sex Tape) broke the rules and became involved in his patients’ lives, providing therapy outside of the office. But in season two, Paul (played by screen legend Harrison Ford) urges him, “Why don’t you try to stick with conventional therapy? Try and be normal.” But normal isn’t really Jimmy’s expertise, especially as he deals with trauma from the death of his wife.
There’s more than just the two stars. As the Guardian review for the new season says, “Shrinking has expanded to become something we all need in our roster of streaming shows: an ensemble piece stuffed with people who are just like us, but a shade smarter, funnier and more outspoken.”
Watch to catch up? Season one is ready to be binge-watched now. And season two is ongoing. Watching Shrinking and many other series or films comes with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service costs $9.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.
And Apple’s streaming video service also includes much more, of course. There’s a growing library of drama, thrillers, comedies, sci-fi, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
